Making an Appointment
If you have decided that therapy might be an option for you right now or even if you're not sure, it's easy to call for a free consultation. It is important that you choose the right therapist for you. The free consultation will let us begin to see if we "click" as a therapeutic team. You will get a chance to answer some basic questions, maybe even alleviate some fears or anxieties about therapy. It also gives me a chance to make sure that I have the appropriate experience and knowledge to help you with your individual concerns. Basic funding and insurance questions can be explored as well at this time. By the end of this consultation we will probably either agree to a first appointment or I will help find a more appropriate referral for you.
To Prepare for Your First Appointment
In order to make our first session as productive as possible, I will ask you to register using the Client Portal on our home page. Some people choose to register before contacting me for the initial consultation. After you register, you will need to complete the biographical information form as completely as you are able. You will also be asked for your payment or insurance information. You may also use this Portal to send me confidential messages as well as to set up appointment reminders by text or email. Later, this Portal will also be set up so that you may reschedule your own appointments as needed. After you have registered and completed the initial paperwork, I will send a confirmation of your first appointment date and time.
Your First Appointment
When you arrive at your first appointment, you will be greeted by our wonderful office support staff. You will be asked to review and sign the Informed Consent form as well as the Notice of Privacy Practices form. If I have deemed it necessary you may also have a brief symptom checklist to complete at this time.
At the beginning of our first session, I will review issues of confidentiality, mandated reporting and answer any pressing questions you have. The remainder of our session will be the Psychosocial Interview where we will review the biographical information you completed, discuss difficulties that you are currently having in your life, and begin setting treatment goals and objectives. Hopefully by the end of this session, you will feel positive about your choice to participate in therapy services. We will then, and at the end of each session, take care of financial obligations and set upcoming appointment times.
Therapeutic Approaches I Might Use in Your Treatment
I use a variety of approaches in therapy. As a professor once told me, you need to have a variety of tools in your therapy toolbox. You can't go around hitting all your clients on the head with the same old hammer. So here are just a few of my therapeutic "tools":

I use a variety of approaches in therapy. As a professor once told me, you need to have a variety of tools in your therapy toolbox. You can't go around hitting all your clients on the head with the same old hammer. So here are just a few of my therapeutic "tools":
- Cognitive-Behavioral therapy, in which we will look at your thought processes and how these negatively influence your emotional states, then attempt to counteract this reaction.
- Mindfulness techniques, to help you achieve a sense of inner quiet.
- Art and other Expressive therapy techniques, to help you express and release feelings more adaptively.
